History and Value: Special Mint Sets (SMS) were produced by the United States Mint in the 1965-1967 period. These sets were introduced as an alternative to Proof Sets during a time when the U.S. Mint temporarily halted proof coin production due to rising demand for coinage for regular circulation.
Special Mint Sets contained coins with a finish that was somewhere between that of regular business strikes and proof coins. They were made using specially polished dies and planchets, resulting in coins with sharper details and a more mirrored surface compared to regular circulation strikes, but not as reflective or as sharply detailed as proof coins.
These sets were only produced for three years, making them relatively scarce compared to other types of U.S. Mint products. As a result, they have gained popularity among collectors, especially those interested in modern U.S. coinage.
