1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

Add the Walking Liberty half dollar to your coin collection to enjoy the elegance of the Adolph A. Weinmen design. The 1943 Walking Liberty half dollar features Lady Liberty on a sunset background on the front, with the reverse showcasing an eagle perched on a rock. These coins were minted in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.

History of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty half dollar was minted between 1916 and 1947. In 1915 Robert Woolley, the 1915 Mint Director, believed the law required him to replace any coin design that had been in use for 25 years, including the half dollar coin. He commissioned a design for a new 50 cent piece from Weinman, and the Walking Liberty half dollar was the result.

The 1943 Walking Liberty half dollar was crafted toward the end of the coin's history, as the Franklin half dollar replaced it at the start of 1948. This was a peak production year for the coin. Nearly 80 million coins went into circulation in 1943.

Specifications of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty 50 cent piece weighs 12.5g and measure 30mm in diameter. It was struck in 90% silver with 10% copper. The coin has a reeded edge. Coins minted in Philadelphia carry no mint mark, but those minted in Denver and a D on the back and those minted in San Francisco sport an S. The mint mark is placed in the 7 o'clock position.

1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar Value

Because the coin is not particularly rare, a circulated 1943 Walking Liberty half dollar value ties in to the value of the silver it contains. Uncirculated coins are harder to find and have increased value to collectors. If the three mintages, the Denver coin is the rarest, followed by the San Francisco, so these are of higher value to collectors.
