1943-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar

Get an iconic coin with an iconic date and mint with this 1943-D Walking Liberty half dollar. In an uncirculated mint state condition, these coins are an excellent collector's item that have had tremendous record auctions. The coin is also popular for its silver content as well as its beautiful design that was commissioned with the help of the Commission of Fine Arts. The 1943-D half dollar was minted in Denver and the series was struck between 1916 and 1947.

History

The Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar signified a rejuvenation in coinage. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt disliked the preceding Barber series and sought a more symbolic coinage for the nation. Roosevelt's sentiments were shared by the Commission of Fine Arts when the U.S. Mint's director, Robert Woolley, asked it to consider its designs. It held a competition with three sculptors in mind for the final rendering. Adolph A. Weinman was chosen to produce the patterns, which were lauded, although they were difficult to perfect and the strikes were known to be weak.

Design specifics

The image of a walking Lady Liberty heading east is on the obverse of the coin, the sun setting in the background while the flag blows in the wind behind her. She carries laurel and oak to signify strength and power. The phrase "In God We Trust" was moved to the side to enlarge the main image. On the reverse is an eagle with wings spread, perched on a rocky ledge, and the small "D" mintmark. The 1943-D like other Denver-minted coins tends to be available in superb condition with a frosty white luster.

1943-D Walking Liberty half dollar value and mintage

The 1943-D Walking Liberty half dollar's relative rarity compared to other D-mints give it a good numismatic value. It can be bought for around $80 although auctions have yielded over $50,000 in a truly superb condition.
