The 1934-D Peace Dollar is one of the better dates in the Peace Dollar series. A total of only 1,569,500 coins were ever minted. It is however the highest mintage in 1934 in comparison with the 1934-S Peace Dollar and the 1934-P Peace Dollar. A really nice brilliant uncirculated 1934-D Peace Dollar can currently be purchased for around $300-$400. However, if you are looking to purchase a higher end gem mint state coin then you should be prepared to spend thousands.
The first year of issue 1921 Peace Dollar was produced mid year. It was produced to replace the 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar. The United States Commission for Fine Arts held a competition among 8 artists to design a new silver dollar that would symbolize peace after the world war had ended. As a result of the contest Anthony D. Francisci was chosen to design the new silver dollar. Anthony's obverse design for the Peace Dollar featured lady liberty as a stunning goddess. Above her head was the words "liberty". On the reverse of the coin was a strong bald eagle. The bald eagle can be seen standing on a rock while holding a olive branch in its talons. Being the oldest symbol of peace, the olive branch was fitting.
Every Peace Dollar was minted in 90% silver and 10% copper. No matter the mint mark or the date, the Peace Dollar contains .7734 troy ounces of silver, has a diameter of 38.1 m, a weight of 26.73 grams, and a reeded edge. This is the same features as the predecessor Morgan Silver Dollar. Throughout the series the Peace Dollar is known to have a weaker strike than the Morgan Dollars.
