The 1923-S Peace Dollar had a mintage 19,020,000 and is one of the more common Peace Dollars in the series. However, in comparison to the 1922-P Peace Dollar, the San Fransisco version is about twice as rare or half the mintage. While a 1923-S Peace Dollar in stunning brilliant uncirculated condition can be bought for as low as $70 or so, higher end mint state coins can get into thousands.
The Peace Dollar was originally designed by Italian immigrant Antonio D. Francisci. He was chosen to design the Peace Silver Dollar after he had won a competition held by the United States Commission of Fine Arts. His obverse design featured a beautiful crowned lady liberty while the reverse of the coin featured a eagle perched on a rock. The Peace Dollar was designed to portray peace after the world war had ended.
The 1923-S Peace Dollar, just like all other Peace Dollars are known to be weakly struck. Some collectors gripe that the Morgan Silver Dollar was a better struck coin than the Peace Dollar, however that doesn't take away from the sheer beauty of the Peace Dollar. On a whole, the Peace Dollar series can be collected for a price tag that is much more affordable than the Morgan Dollars and thus many collectors prefer the Peace Dollars over the Morgan Silver Dollars.
