The Peace Dollar was originally minted in 1921 and was produced until 1935. There was a small gap in production from 1929 to 1933 and then in 1934 the Peace Dollar was produced again through 1935. The Peace Dollar was originally produced as a result of a competition hosted by the United States Commission for Fine Arts. The commission wanted something that portrayed peace after the world war had ended. The designer chosen to create the 1923-D Peace Dollar, along with every other Peace Dollar produced was Anthony D. Francisci. An Italian immigrant with humble beginnings, Anthony came to the United States in the early 1900's. Anthony choose the obverse of the Peace Dollar to be a stunning goddess of liberty and the reverse to be a bald eagle.
The 1923-D Peace Dollar was minted at the Denver mint and had a mintage of only 6,811,000 coins. It is one of the lower mintages in the series and one of the slightly more rare dates. A brilliant uncirculated specimen will currently run you around $100 or better, while a really high end mint state could run you thousands of dollars. As with all coins the higher the grade, the more costly the coin becomes. The 1923-D Peace Dollar is only the second ever minted Denver coin in the series.
