Morgan Silver Dollars were first minted in 1878, with the series continuing for 27 years until it stopped in 1904 due to a shortage of silver. The U.S. involvement in World War I was a large contributor to the shortage of silver in America, but that issue was resolved by the Pittman Act which passed in 1918 after we won the war. The Pittman Act allowed the U.S. government to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on purchasing silver that would be melted down in order to produce more coins. In turn, this allowed for Morgan Silver Dollars to be struck one more time in 1921. Thereafter, Peace Silver Dollars would first be minted in 1921 to celebrate our victory in World War I. Prior to the Morgan Dollar was the Seated Liberty Dollar.

At the time, an assistant engraver in the U.S. Mint, George T. Morgan was the designer of the Morgan Silver Dollar and would later become the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. Arguably his most successful and beautiful design, the reverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar depicts the image of a majestic American Bald Eagle with 7 tail feathers that is holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other talon. The obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar design is of Lady Liberty with 13 stars surrounding her image, with each star representing the original 13 colonies. Surprising as it may be, the original model for the obverse design of Lady Liberty was a school teacher by the name of Anna Williams.

The Morgan Silver Dollar series was minted at Philadelphia (P) San Francisco (S), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC), and Denver (D). The Denver struck Morgan Silver Dollar was a unique case because 1921 was the only year it was minted in the Denver Mint.

Morgan Silver Dollars have a $1 face value and they are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. In total, the silver content of each Morgan Silver Dollar is .7734 troy ounces. The weight of each of these coins is 26.73 grams and each one has a diameter of 38.1 mm. The mintage of the 1884-P Morgan Silver Dollar was 14,070,000, which makes it more of a common date but also much more affordable compared to the rarer pieces. These are just a few reasons as to why Morgan Silver Dollars have and always will be beloved by investors and collectors alike.
