One of the most beautiful coins ever, the Morgan Silver Dollar was minted from 1878-1904, with production briefly ceasing until 1921. The reason for the brief pause placed on production of these coins was because there was a shortage of silver in America, primarily resulting from World War I. Fortunately in 1918, the U.S. passed the Pittman Act which authorized the government to purchase hundreds of millions of dollars worth of silver, which would then be melted and used in order to produce more Morgan Silver Dollars. Before the Morgan Silver Dollar series was the Seated Liberty Dollar, and after the Morgan Silver Dollars series was the Peace Silver Dollar series, which began in 1921 to celebrate our victory in World War I.

George T. Morgan is the genius behind the design of the Morgan Silver Dollar. He began his career as an assistant engraver in the U.S. Mint and shortly after he became the Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint. He chose Anna William, a school teacher, to be the model for the face of Lady Liberty on the obverse side of the Morgan Silver Dollar. On the reverse side of the Morgan Silver Dollar is a fierce American Bald Eagle with 7 tail feathers, carrying arrows with one talon and an olive branch with another talon. These two beautiful designs are the reason why collectors and investors both love acquiring more Morgan Silver Dollars.

This coin is a seventh year of issue in the set which means it is especially sought after because it is one of the first years of issue. A true masterpiece, the Carson City Mint only produced these coins between 1878 and 1885, temporarily ceasing production only to pick back up in 1889 until 1893. Many Carson City bags filled with coins were later discovered in treasury vaults. These coins were essentially forgotten about until they were rediscovered. Attempting to quickly distribute this significant piece of history, President Nixon signed a law in 1970 that authorized the sale of these coins through the General Service Admission to dealers and collectors over the course of a decade. In this rush, many mistakes were made during the distribution of the inventory, some coins even included the special and unique GSA holder.

The Morgan Silver Dollar was minted at five different mints over its almost fifty year span. Specifically, the Morgan Silver Dollars were struck at Philadelphia (P) San Francisco (S), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC), and Denver (D). The Denver Morgan Dollar was a special issue because it was only minted in the year 1921.

Each Morgan Silver Dollar has a face value of $1 and is made of 90% silver and 10% copper. In total, Morgan Silver Dollars have .7734 troy ounces of silver content. The weight for each of these coins is 26.73 grams and they have a diameter of 38.1 mm. The mintage of the 1884 Carson City Morgan Dollar was only 1,136,000, making it much more rare than the Philadelphia version which was 14,070,000 and the San Francisco which was 3,200,000.
