Constantine II was the first son of Constantine the Great and his second wife, Fausta. He was ”born in the purple“, destined to become Caesar at a young age, and he grew up a spoiled, entitled child. As a young ruler it was important to advertise his status, and the best way to do so was on was on the coinage that would circulate his empire. The obverse depicts a bust of the budding ruler, thus spreading his visage across the lands.
The reverse shows a campgate, a common motif for coins of the Constantinian dynasty. The campgate represented the protection that was afforded by the military, for example against barbarians.
