Vikings may have had a reputation for being savage barbarians, but they had a deep culture that they were able to spread as far as America (500 years before Columbus!) and Constantinople. It was when some Vikings attacked a peaceful monastery at Lindisfarne in 793, that the barbaric and cruel stereotype began. Their culture was rich with mythology, pagan religion, and art. As a seafaring culture, they sailed around the world pillaging and trading with countless cultures.
The Vikings however did not mint coins for several centuries, instead they used Arabic dirhams that they stockpiled from trade or from pillaging. This coin is an Abbasid dirham that is the exact same type of coin that has been found in Viking burial hoards as far as Scotland! This coin acts as an amazing reminder of the rich culture of the Vikings, and it belongs in your collection!
