History and Description

The 2016-W American Silver Eagle Proof is a special series offering. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of American Silver Eagles, this coin features a unique lettered edge where the rest of Silver Eagle coins feature a reeded edge. Like other coins in the series, it has been minted with one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver and features a weight of 31.01g.

This 2016-W American Silver Eagle Proof coin’s obverse side features the 1916 Walking Liberty design that first appeared in 1916 on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Designed by the German-American engraver and sculptor Adolphe A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty design is one of the most revered in American coin history. In it, Liberty is striding toward the horizon. She is holding branches of oak and laurel in one arm while her other is outstretched toward the sun.

The coin’s reverse side pays homage to the early American eagle created by Robert Scot in 1796. Sculptor John Mercanti updated the heraldic eagle for this collectors’ series. Also included on this side are 13 stars that represent the nation’s original 13 colonies.

The 2016 American Silver Eagle coins are egal tender in the United States. They are engraved with a face value of 1 oz fine silver dollar. However, it’s market value will rise and fall with the market value for silver and what collectors are willing to pay for the coin.
