American silver eagle coins history
2008 marked the start of the financial crisis that affected America and much of the world. During times of economic instability, higher numbers of people are interested in buying precious metals, including coins. In 2008 the US mint increased its production of silver eagle coins to record numbers to meet demands. A total of 21 million silver eagles were struck, which was more than double the year before. Of the 21 million minted, 700,979 of these were proof coins, struck at the West Point minting facility.
Like in all other years, the 2008-W silver eagle coin features the walking liberty obverse, designed by Adolph Weinman in 1916. It was designed for the half dollar coin circulated between 1916 and 1947 and became one of America's most iconic coins.
As the coins name suggests, the silver eagles reverse features a bald eagle, which is often used to symbolize America's culture and freedom. The design also has a shield, and the eagle is holding olive branches in its talons to represent freedom.
