Silver eagle coins' history

In 1986 the American Mint started designing annual silver and gold coins. The silver eagles were minted using .999 fine silver. Gold and platinum versions of the coin were also minted.

The obverse of the Silver Eagle bears the Walking Liberty half dollar design. It was decided to use this design as its an iconic American image and was so popular with the public. The Walking Liberty coin was designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and circulated until 1947.

The coin’s reverse design portrays a heraldic eagle. Sculptor and engraver John Mercanti created the reverse. The eagle is behind a shield, holding arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left.
