The 1999 Silver Eagle is one of America's largest coins with a diameter of 40.6 mm. The 1999 proofs have a thickness of 3.1mm. This is slightly chunkier than uncirculated and bullion coins produced in the same year, with a diameter of 2.98 mm. These coins are struck using 99% silver and 1% copper and weigh an ounce each.
American silver eagle history
The American silver eagle coins were commissioned in 1985 by Ronald Reagan, who wanted to improve the look of America's coinage. The silver eagle has the same obverse as the half dollar coins minted between 1916 to 1947. This coin has Lady Liberty, who’s carrying an American flag draped across her body and holding a branch. The coin's obverse was originally designed by a sculpture called Adolf A. Weinman.
The coin has the word ‘LIBERTY’ on the top face, and the motto ‘In God We Trust.’ 1999 is embossed at the base of the coin.
The coins' reverse features a stunning heraldic eagle, which represents America's freedom. It was designed by John Mercanti and symbolized peace. The design has thirteen stars, which represent America's original colonies. The Latin phrase ‘E Pluribus Unum’ is written on the shield. It means ‘Out of Many, One.’
The silver eagle has been struck by three mints, with the 1999 coin being minted in Philadelphia. Each 1999 proof silver eagle has a ‘P’ mintmark on the reverse to show where it was made. Bullion coins have no such mark. The Philadelphia mint produced 549,769 silver eagles in 1999 as proofs.
