The lasting impact of our Founding Father and first President of the United States George Washington is evident from the designs of American currency for over a century. His likeness has appeared on quarters since 1932, a silver half dollar in 1982, a $5 gold coin in 1999, a dollar coin in 2007, and on the $1 bill since 1869.
His portrait was also included on $1 Silver Certificates, which were notes that were exchangable for their equivalent value in silver bullion. Once the U.S. moved off of the Gold Standard for the U.S. Dollar's value, the Silver Certificates were discontinued. These notes featured rich blue Treasury seals and serial numbers to help distinguish them from normal bank notes.
The Series of 1957 $1 Silver Certificates were the last issued, and they remained redeemable for silver until 1968, when they converted to only being used as a normal $1 bill. At nearly 75 years old, these notes are hard to find in good condition, as they usually have much wear and tear from use and the passage of time.
This $1 Silver Certificate is accompanied by the first ever modern commemorative coin, the 1982 George Washington Commemorative 90% Silver Half Dollar. This piece was struck to commemorate the 250th birthday of George Washington, and it reignited the public's passion for commemorative coins. It was also the first 90% silver coin minted since 1964! The obverse shows George Washington in a military uniform beside a horse, while the reverse shows his Mount Vernon home.
