1939 Wheat Penny

The 1939 Wheat Penny had a total mintage of over 316 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Philadelphia Mint was known for its excellent craftsmanship and usually produced well-struck coins. The 1939 Wheat Penny was a plentiful coin on the market and cherrypicking is relatively easy so that collectors can find one that has a sharp strike and attractive surfaces.

History of the 1939 Wheat Penny

Although the 1939 Wheat Penny is plentiful, it commands a higher price for its Mint State coins in the highest grades compared to others within the series. This coin would make a great addition to any Lincoln Cent series collection. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. At the time, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.

1939 Wheat Penny Worth

The 1939 Wheat Penny value ranges from around one thousand dollars to upwards of nearly ten thousand dollars depending on the grade and coloring of the coin. It is worth the effort to find a beautiful, well-struck example to add to your Wheat Penny series collection.
