1892 Indian Head Penny

While it is extremely rare to find a 1892 Indian Head Penny still in circulation, they are readily available to collectors at affordable prices. Mintage numbers for 1892 had dropped by around 10 million over the previous year, but were still well above 37 million. The one cent coin was a popular form of currency at the time, which created quite a bit of demand.

1892 Indian Head Penny Design

The 1892 Indian Head Cent comes in three different shades: red, red-brown and brown. With this year, the brown version is the hardest to find and carries the most value. Otherwise, the overall design remained unchanged over the past few decades.

The distinguishing features of the Indian Head Penny include a female bust with flowing hair and an Indian Chief headdress. While the coin has a smooth edge, it does have a raised border made up of tiny diamonds shapes. The back of the coin has an oak wreath surrounding the words “One Cent” and a shield placed at the opening of the wreath.

1892 Indian Head Penny Value

In average condition, one of these coins is worth about $4. If you can find one in mint condition, it may be valued for as much as $105. While there are more valuable coins in the Indian Head Penny series, this year is still a great part of any collection. It represents the early days of American currency and history.
