Much like previous years, the 1888 Indian Head Penny is a relatively common one-cent coin. In 1888, there weren’t any major changes made to the design and the penny continued to be minted in numbers over 37 million. While there are still over 1,000 of the coins in circulation, very few of them are considered to be of a high grade.
1888 Indian Head Penny Design
By 1888, the Indian Head Penny design had been the standard for decades. The design was meant to evoke a more “national” feel that represented the unique aspects of America. The female profile featured on one side is said to be a depiction of the Goddess Liberty. She is wearing an Indian Chief headdress in a nod to the indigenous people of the US.
The reverse side of the coin includes an oak wreath that encircles the words “One Cent” and a shield at the top. Over the years, there had been slight variations in the design due to different proofs, but the design remained essentially the same.
1888 Indian Head Penny Value
A 1888 Indian Head One Cent coin costs an average of around $3. Certified mint condition coins that have been graded by a reputable company can go for up to $150. While the 1888 Indian Head Penny is not one of the most unique pennies, it is still highly collectible, especially for those who are looking to create a complete set of one cent coins.
