The Morgan Silver Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904 and then once again in 1921. Many collectors consider the Morgan Silver Dollar to be one of the most beautifully designed coins in all of American history. Due to a shortage of silver, Morgan Silver Dollars were no longer produced between 1904 and 1921, but after WWI, the Pittman Act was passed which allowed for the US government to melt older coins and use the silver to continue the series one last time in 1921. In celebration of our victory in World War I, the Peace Silver Dollar was also produced in 1921. Preceding the Morgan Silver Dollar series was the Seated Liberty Dollar.

George T. Morgan was the designer of the esteemed Morgan Silver Dollar. First an assistant engraver in the U.S. Mint, he soon became the Chief Engraver because of his incredible artistic ability. His Morgan Silver Dollar design featured an image of an American Bald Eagle on the reverse side of the coin, which displayed 7 detailed tail feathers. The Eagle was featured holding arrows with one talon and an olive branch with the other talon. On the obverse of the coin Lady Liberty’s face is featured with 13 stars surrounding her gorgeous face. Each star represents one of the original 13 US colonies. Unknown to many, the model for Lady Liberty was a school teacher named Anna Williams.

This coin is a sixth year of issue in the set which means it is highly sought after because it is one of the first to ever be produced. The Philadelphia Mint not only produced a Morgan Silver Dollar in 1883, but also produced them every single year of the series. Furthermore, the Morgan Silver Dollar was minted at all five different mints over the course of its almost fifty year lifespan. To be specific, the Morgan Silver Dollars were struck at Philadelphia (P) San Francisco (S), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC), and Denver (D). The Denver minted Morgan Silver Dollar was a special issue because it was only minted for the year 1921.

Each Morgan Silver Dollar has a $1 face value, composed of only 90% silver and 10% copper. Overall, each Morgan Silver Dollar has over 3/4th pure troy ounces of silver content. The weight of each coin is 26.73 grams and each Morgan Dollar has a diameter of 38.1 mm. The mintage of the 1883-P Morgan Dollar was 12,291,039, making it much more common and affordable in the series compared to the other mintages.

Each and every single one of these 1883 Philadelphia Morgan Silver Dollars are in absolutely stunning brilliant uncirculated condition. This is remarkable when you consider that the coin is 137 years old! It is of no surprise that the United States would produce such a stunning piece that would stand the test of time.
