The 1882-O Morgan Silver Dollars is one of the nicest struck coins in the Morgan Dollar series. George T. Morgan’s most famous design was the Morgan Silver Dollar, minted from 1878-1904, ceasing production temporarily until 1921. Shortages in silver arose, especially during World War I, caused a pause in Morgan Silver Dollar production. Fortunately, our government had spent millions of dollars to buy silver, melting other silver coins in order to produce more. Beautifully designed, the obverse (front) of the coin depicts Lady Liberty with 13 stars around her face, each star representing one of the 13 original US colonies. The obverse (back) of the coin depicts a brave American Bald Eagle, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Due to the Pittman Act, many of the original and older Morgan Silver Dollar coins were melted and because of this far fewer are available in circulation compared to the originally minted. This in turn makes the Morgan Dollar harder to find and more expensive to acquire.
