Morgan Silver Dollars were minted from 1878-1904, stopping only temporarily in 1904 due to a nation-wide shortage of silver in the U.S. 1921 was the last year of issue for the Morgan Silver Dollar series in which production continued because in 1918 after we had won World War I, the Pittman Act was passed, which allowed for our U.S. government to buy and melt hundreds of millions of dollars worth of silver that would be used to create more coins. Our victory in the World War had to be celebrated, so the U.S. government decided to create the Peace Silver Dollar, and prior to the Morgan Silver Dollar series was the Seated Liberty Dollar series. The Barber Half Dollar and Walking Liberty Half Dollar coins were also being produced at the same time period as these silver dollars.

Most of George T. Morgan’s fame is attributed to his design of the beautiful Morgan Dollar series, including the 1889-O Morgan Silver Dollar. At the time when he first created the design concept for the coin, he was an assistant in the U.S. Mint, but shortly after he became the Chief Engraver. On the reverse side of his design is a brave American Bald Eagle with 7 tail feathers that is holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other talon. On the obverse side of the coin is Lady Liberty’s face with 13 stars surrounding her image, with each star representing the original 13 colonies. Although she was not famous, a school teacher by the name of Anna Williams was selected to be the original model for Lady Liberty.

The Morgan Silver Dollar series was minted at the following mint branches: Philadelphia (P) San Francisco (S), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC), and Denver (D). The Morgan Silver Dollar was struck in Denver for the last year of issue for the series in 1921. The 1921 Denver Morgan Silver Dollar had a relatively high mintage of 20,345,000.

Morgan Silver Dollars are well known for having a $1 face value, composed of 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, and each one has a diameter of 38.1 mm. The mintage of the 1889-O Morgan Silver Dollar was 11,875,000, which makes it far rarer than the Philadelphia which has a mintage of 21,726,000. Because of their silver content, Morgan Silver Dollars are often collected not only for their numismatic value, but silver content as well.
