Morgan Silver Dollars were first minted in 1878 and continued until 1904. The series then paused for a sixteen year span and was made for only one more year in 1921. In 1921 a Philadelphia, San Francisco, and a Denver Morgan Dollar were minted.

The beauty of the Morgan Silver Dollars are well reflected in their popularity. This coin is a second year of issue for the series. According to estimates, less than 5% of the original mintage of the 1879-P Morgan Silver Dollars are still available. The main contributing factor as to why so few have survived is because the US government melted down so many of the coins under the Pittman Act. The U.S. Government did this to help the war efforts during World War I & II.

The image on the reverse side of the Morgan Silver Dollar is of a powerful American Bald Eagle that has an olive branch in one talon, and arrows in another. The front of the coin, otherwise known as the obverse, features an image of Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars which represent the original 13 colonies. Both the obverse and the reverse of the coin were designed by George T. Morgan. George was originally an assistant engraver and later became the Chief Engraver at the United States Mint. Preceding George T. Morgan’s Morgan Silver Dollar design was the Seated Liberty Dollar and after the Morgan Dollar Series had ended was the Peace Silver Dollar.

The Philadelphia struck Morgan Dollars are typically more common than Morgan Silver Dollars that were struck at other mints, but they are often ideal for investors that are looking for more affordable silver. Moreover, Philadelphia Morgan Dollars are also great for collectors looking to have a piece of history and complete their Morgan Silver Dollar set. Named after the designer George T. Morgan, these coins are in high demand for good reason. Everyone wants a beautiful piece of American silver history with tremendous numismatic value to go with it, especially at an affordable price. Philadelphia specimens can often be found at more affordable prices than other mint marks.

While this coin was specifically struck in Philadelphia (P), other Morgan Silver Dollars have also been struck in San Francisco (S), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC), and Denver. The Philadelphia Morgan Dollars carry a $1 denomination and have no mint mark on the reverse of the coin. It is composed of 90% silver, 10% copper, and contains .7734 troy ounces of silver. Each coin weighs 26.73 grams and has a diameter of 38.1mm. Furthermore, each Morgan Silver Dollar, including the 1879-P Morgan Dollar features a reeded edge.
