Designed by George T. Morgan, the Morgan Silver Dollar was minted from 1878 until production temporarily ceased in 1904, only to begin one more time in 1921. This brief pause had occurred due to shortages of silver, primarily caused by World War I and II. The obverse (front) of the coin has an image of Lady Liberty, surrounded by 13 stars which are symbolic of the original 13 colonies. The reverse (back) of the coin has a fierce American Bald Eagle that is holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Morgan Silver Dollars are well known for the tremendous numismatic value they have because collectors and investors often flock towards them when they make their purchases. The 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar is no exception. Understandably so, the prices associated with Morgan Silver Dollars can vary greatly, primarily due to mintage/rarity, and the grade or quality of the coin. Unfortunately, many of these Morgan Silver Dollars were melted down by the government in order to make more, so they are harder to come by, especially in higher grades.
This coin was specifically struck at the San Francisco mint, whereas the other four locations where Morgan Silver Dollars have been minted are: Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, and Carson City. San Francisco minted Morgan Dollars often have lower original mintages than the Philadelphia’s, making them harder to find and pricier. 9,110,000 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollars were minted, but not nearly as many are left because many were melted down.
Like the other Morgan Silver Dollars, this one is still a large coin with a diameter of 38.1 millimeters and weight of 26.73 grams. Like the other Morgan Dollars of the series, this coin also has a face value of $1, consisting of 90% silver & 10% copper, having more than 3/4th oz of pure troy silver in it.
