One of the most well-known parts of Japanese history is the Samurai. From the late 12th century until their abolition in 1876, Samurai were the hereditary military nobility of Japan. These warriors were highly skilled and were in service to the Daimyo, localized feudal landowners. They lived according to the code of Bushido, and were highly paid for their service. Once the Meiji Restoration ended the Tokugawa Shogunate, the new government system and modern weapons like guns rendered the Samurai obsolete.

Coin production in the 19th century consisted of rectangular hammered precious metals: silver shu, silver bu, and gold/silver ni-bu. The silver bu in this set was in circulation during the final days of the Samurai. This antique bu coin stands as a fascinating and valuable artifact of Japan's rich cultural heritage, and a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship found throughout Japanese history.
