Roman AE of Licinius I, AD 308–324 – IOVI CONSERVATORI, NGC Ch VF

Step back into the turbulent final decades of the Roman Tetrarchy with this ancient Roman bronze coin of Emperor Licinius I, professionally authenticated and graded Choice Very Fine (Ch VF) by NGC Ancients. Featuring the powerful image of Jupiter, supreme god of the Roman pantheon, this coin combines fascinating late Roman history with an exceptionally important religious and political message.

Historical Significance

Licinius I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 308 to 324, during one of the most dramatic periods in Roman history. His reign overlapped with that of Constantine the Great, and the two emperors maintained an uneasy alliance that eventually deteriorated into open conflict.

The reverse of this coin carries the inscription IOVI CONSERVATORI, meaning “Jove the Protector” or “Jupiter, Protector.” Jupiter was the supreme deity of the traditional Roman religion, and his appearance on the coin represented divine protection of the emperor and the Roman state.

Jupiter is shown standing and holding Victory on a globe while resting his other hand on a scepter. An eagle, another powerful symbol of Jupiter and Rome, appears alongside him. The imagery communicates a clear political message: the emperor ruled under the protection and authority of Rome's greatest god.

The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity notes that these Jupiter issues were intended to promote cohesion and convey the message that the Empire remained in stable hands.

The Coin

This AE Reduced Nummus is a fascinating example of the bronze coinage produced during the late Tetrarchic period. The large, symbol-rich reverse design makes this type particularly attractive to collectors of Roman Imperial and Late Roman coinage.

The portraits of rulers from this period were often highly stylized rather than intended to be exact likenesses. As the accompanying certificate explains, emperors were portrayed as strong and powerful military figures, with their identities confirmed through inscriptions and mint markings.
