Washington quarter history
The Washington quarter was designed to replace the Standing Liberty quarters as many people considered their design to be unsatisfactory. This was due to their low relief, which meant that the coins became easily worn.
The Washington Quarter was created to celebrate the bicentennial of the 1732 birth of George Washington. There was initially plans to create a commemorative half dollar and a medal for the occasion. However, President Hoover felt that the monetary system would be harmed by doing so. It was then decided that a quarter dollar should be designed for regular issue, rather than as a commemorative coin.
The Washington quarters obverse features a left-facing image of George Washington, which was created by sculptor John F. Flanagan. On its obverse is a bald eagle sitting on a branch with wings spread and a half wreath of olive branches underneath.
The Washington quarter was minted in the millions, so it isn’t particularly rare. It is, however, a popular coin with collectors. Silver versions of the modern coin are produced annually for collectors.
Older coins are valued, depending on their condition, with circulated coins usually selling for about $10 each. If you choose to buy this set from Bullion Shark, you’ll receive the coins for less than $5 each!
