American Silver Eagle History and Description

The 2015-W Burnished Silver Eagle NGC MS70 coin is made from 99.9% pure silver and has a weight of 31.1g. This coin features a reeded edge and diameter of 40.6mm. Featuring the design that first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin, this Burnished Silver Eagle shows Lady Liberty standing before the horizon with an arm stretched toward the sun on its obverse side. In her other arm, she carries branches of oak and laurel, symbols of American glory. The words “In God We Trust” appear to Lady Liberty’s right. The word “Liberty” appears above her head and the year of issue is stamped beneath her. The design was created by German-American sculptor and engraver Adolphe A. Weinman.

This coin’s reverse side features a commanding American eagle. The first American eagle was designed in 1796 by Robert Scot. John Mercanti updated the eagle design for Silver Eagle coins. This side of the coin also shows 13 stars that reflect the original 13 colonies.

Silver Eagle Prices

This 2015 Burnished Silver Eagle is legal tender in the United States. It is engraved with a face value of 1 oz fine silver one dollar. The value of the silver will necessarily rise and fall with the market values for silver bullion. However, these coins, with their low mintage, remain popular with collectors of rare coins.
