Silver Eagle History and Description
This 2015-W American Silver Eagle Proof is regarded in the U.S. as legal tender and features a composition of 99.9% fine silver. It has a diameter of 40.6mm, a weight of 31.01g, and a reeded edge.
Although named for its American Eagle design, this coin’s obverse side features the famous Walking Liberty half dollar design created by Adolph A. Weinman, a German-American sculptor and engraver. His design first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin. This stunning engraving shows Lady Liberty holding branches of laurel and oak which are symbols of American glory. Her other arm is outstretched toward the horizon. The word “Liberty” is etched above her head while the date of issue appears below her figure. To her right is the motto “In God We Trust.”
The bold heraldic American Eagle on the reverse side of the 2015-W American Silver Eagle Proof coin was designed by sculptor and 12th chief engraver John Mercanti. It lends its name to this coin series. Buyers will note that 13 stars, indicative of America’s 13 original colonies, appear above the eagle’s head.
