The 2011-P $1 James Garfield Presidential Dollar is a notable addition to the U.S. Mint's Presidential Dollar Coin Program. Released into circulation on November 17, 2011, it represents the twentieth design in this esteemed series, commemorating James Garfield, the twentieth President of the United States. DESIGNER: Phoebe Hemphill/Don Everhart EDGE: Lettered DIAMETER: 26.50 millimeters WEIGHT: 8.10 grams MINTAGE: 6,020,000 MINT: Philadelphia METAL: 77% Copper, 12% Zinc, 1% other over a pure Copper core *Mixed positions. On Presidential Dollars, the edge lettering of the coins can either face up or down. Position A indicates the coins edge can be read correctly, only when the coins obverse is facing down or if the reverse side is facing up. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, as indicated by the 'P' mint mark, this coin features a finely detailed portrait of James Garfield on the obverse. The engraving captures the distinctive facial features and hairstyle of Garfield, offering a glimpse into the late 19th-century era of his presidency. Above the portrait, the inscription "James Garfield" clearly identifies the figure depicted. Below the image, the inscriptions "20th President" and the dates of his presidency are elegantly displayed. The reverse side of the coin showcases the iconic Statue of Liberty, a design consistent across the Presidential Dollar series. Below Liberty’s right arm, the denomination "$1" is clearly shown, signifying the coin's face value. The words "United States of America" encircle the design, completing its national theme. A unique aspect of the 2011-P James Garfield Presidential Dollar is its inclusion in the special Coin Covers offered by the Mint on December 29, 2011.
