1963 Jefferson Nickel
The 1963 Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 175 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This was a jump of almost 80 million more coins struck compared to the previous year. This is a large mintage and is also a very common coin in circulated grades and lower Mint State grades up to about MS63. Around Mint State 66, the 1963 Jefferson Nickel becomes scarce and then very scarce around MS67, with only a handful known in existence. It’s possible to find this coin with the Full Step designation all the way up to MS67 and at a reasonable price compared to some of the others in the series of equal quality, making it a high value coin for those looking for the Full Step.
History of the 1963 Jefferson Nickel
The 1963 Jefferson Nickel has a large mintage making it the perfect candidate for cherrypicking. Look for coins that are well struck with minimal to no surface abrasions and great overall eye appeal. This coin has some truly spectacular examples available that can be found with some careful searching. The original Jefferson Nickel design was created by Felix Schlag who won a design contest for the coin. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson’s head, hence the name of the coin, and the reverse of the coin showcases his Monticello home. The Jefferson Nickel is still in production today, but the designs have changed from the original over the years.
1963 Jefferson Nickel Value
The 1963 Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around $3,600 to $3,600 for the highest grades of the coin in Mint State and Full Step. Usually coins have a wider discrepancy between the prices of uncirculated Mint State and Full Step coins, but this one shows they are mostly of equal value, possibly due to the scarcity of Mint State coins. The 1963 Jefferson Nickel would make a great find for any collector looking for a high-quality, yet mostly affordable coin.
