1955 Jefferson Nickel
The 1955 Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 7.8 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This is one of the smallest mintages in the series which could make it a key date. Although it has a lower mintage, it isn’t the easiest coin to find in the highest grades. The 1955 Jefferson Nickel usually has a lower quality strike and requires some careful searching to find a coin that is both attractive overall and also a great value. Uncirculated examples around Mint State 66 and greater are all scarce and difficult to find. It is believed that there may be less than 100-200 available in existence above MS66.
History of the 1955 Thomas Jefferson Nickel
The 1955 Thomas Jefferson Nickel is a great coin to find, especially if you can find it well-struck with attractive surfaces. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag who won a design competition. His designs are featured in their original form in these early years of the series. The coin is still in production today even though the designs have changed somewhat over the years. The reverse of the coin showcases Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello home. This coin can have a Full Step designation when the steps leading up to the home are fully struck. Full Step versions of the coin typically command a higher premium. The obverse of the coin features Thomas Jefferson himself in profile.
1955 Jefferson Nickel Value
The 1955 Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around $1,000 to upwards of $12,000 for the highest grades of the coin in Mint State and Full Step varieties. If this coin was found in grades higher than MS65 or MS66, it would likely command an even higher premium than it already does. The 1955 Jefferson Nickel is a unique coin that would make a fun coin to hunt down in higher grades.
