1950-D Jefferson Nickel

The 1950-D Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of just over 2.6 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. This was a tiny mintage compared to most of the other issue dates within the series and for the issues released from the Denver Mint within the series. The 1950-D Jefferson Nickel is considered a key date within the series due to this low mintage. Although it is one of the smallest mintages in the series, it has always been a key date which means that collectors have taken good care of the coins over the years so they are possible to find in some of the highest Mint State grades as well as by the roll.

History of the 1950-D Jefferson Nickel

The 1950-D Jefferson Nickel would be the crown jewel of a Jefferson Nickel collection. Due to its perceived value and desire by collectors, expect it to cost a pretty penny, especially in the highest grades. The original design of the Jefferson Nickel was created by design competition winner Felix Schlag. His designs featured a left-facing head of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse of the coin. The reverse depicted Jefferson’s Monticello home, with some coins having a Full Step designation if the steps leading up to the house were fully struck. The Jefferson Nickel has changed somewhat over the years, but it is still in production today.
