1944-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar
Coin collectors consider the Walking Liberty silver half dollar design to be one of the most attractive designs for a coin minted to be used as money. The beautiful design was created by Adolph Weinman, a German-American artist known for his sculpting. Mr. Weinman won a design competition sponsored by the Commission on Fine Arts. As winner, he was commissioned to design the half dollar and the dime. This lovely design wasn’t Weinman’s first design and other designs were rejected before this one won approval. The 1944-S Walking Liberty half dollar is one of the most poorly struck coins in the entire Walking Liberty series. Only the 1940-S suffers from a weaker strike. Even mint state coins can have a poor strike on Liberty’s left hand.
1944-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar Value, Scarcity, and Key Dates
The 1944-S Walking Liberty half dollar value starts at $9 for a coin in a low-grade circulated coin condition and rises to $40 for a coin in a higher-grade uncirculated condition. In mint or Gem states it is about as scarce as the the1943-S Walking Liberty silver half dollar but neither coin is considered to be rare. What is rare is a sharply struck 1944-S Walking Liberty coin. A perfect coin is a fake, because strike is such an issue, a perfectly struck coin doesn’t exist. Walking Liberty half dollar key dates do not include the poorly struck 1944-S Walking Liberty coin.
