1943-S Jefferson Nickel

1943-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1943-S Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 104 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. This was a much larger mintage than the previous years at the San Francisco Mint, with more than double the amount of coins produced compared to the previous year. Possibly due to this massive mintage, the 1943-S Jefferson Nickel is relatively common, plentiful, and easy to find in circulated and uncirculated Mint State grades. It’s most common around Mint State 66. The Full Step versions are also relatively common, but are two to three times more rare than their non-Full Step counterparts.

History of the 1943-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1943-S Jefferson Nickel is a plentiful coin that is possible to cherrypick through to find one with a full strike and excellent overall eye appeal. There is a little something for collectors of all types, ranging from circulated to uncirculated Full Step coins. This is one of the unique war time “silver” coins that had a different composition due to the need for Nickel by the military at the time. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson in profile, and his Monticello home is depicted on the reverse, along with the popular enlarged ‘S’ mint mark above the dome of the Monticello home. The original coin was designed by Felix Schlag, and although the designs have changed over the years, it is still in production today.

1943-S Thomas Jefferson Nickel Value

The 1943-S Thomas Jefferson Nickel value hovers around $9,000 for the highest Mint State and Full Step versions of the coins. Both command this higher-than-average price, possibly due to the uniqueness of the coin and the value of San Francisco minted coins. The 1943-S Jefferson Nickel would make a valuable addition to any Jefferson Nickel series collection, and can be found at affordable prices in lower Mint State and circulated grades.
