1939-D Jefferson Nickel
The 1939-D Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of just over 3.5 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. This was a much smaller mintage compared to the Philadelphia minted coin of this year that had over 120 million coins struck. Like the 1939 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, the 1939-D Jefferson Nickel also comes in the reverse of 1938 and reverse of 1940 varieties. It features the ‘D’ mint mark on the reverse of the coin next to the Monticello building. This is a popular date due to its extremely small mintage compared to others in the series. It is one of the smallest mintages, in fact.
History of the 1939-D Jefferson Nickel
The 1939-D Jefferson Nickel is a highly sought after coin, especially in Full Step and well-struck, high-grade varieties. It is a scarce date in both the reverse of 1938 and the reverse of 1940 and is worth the effort to cherrypick for that beautiful example. The coin was designed by Felix Schlag after his designs were chosen in a competition. The obverse of the coin features the left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson, and the reverse showcases his Monticello house.
1939-D Jefferson Nickel Values
The 1939-D Jefferson Nickel values come in a wide range of prices just like the Philadelphia minted version of this same year. It can be found in prices ranging from $1,000 to over $26,000 for the highest grades of the coins found in Mint State and Full Step varieties of both reverse options. This is a special coin that would make a valuable addition to any Jefferson Nickel coin series and is a fun one to hunt down for the avid collector.
