1938-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1938-S Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 4.1 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. This coin is considered a key date within the series. It has one of the smallest mintages out of the Thomas Jefferson Nickel series as well which adds to its appeal. While it had one of the smallest mintages, it is still relatively easy to locate in Mint State, likely because many of the coins were saved by collectors upon release and never went out into circulation. The 1938-S Jefferson Nickel features the ‘S’ mint mark on the reverse of the coin next to the Monticello. 

 

History of the 1938-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1938-S Jefferson Nickel is a key date within the series that is worth the effort to choose carefully for a well-struck coin. Many of the coins have weaker details on both the obverse and reverse, and it’s believed this was due to dies that were fairly worn out. The obverse of the coin showcases Thomas Jefferson in profile and facing the left side of the coin. The reverse shows his Monticello home. This 5 cent coin is still in circulation and being produced today, although the designs have changed more in recent years. Felix Schlag was the designer of the original Jefferson Nickels after winning a competition for the coin designs.

The 1938-S Jefferson Nickel values range from around $1,600 to upwards of $9,200 for the highest Mint State grades of the coin in regular and Full Step varieties. This coin is a great value because of being a key date, the first year of issue of the coin, the popular ‘S’ mint mark, and because it is possible to find it at more affordable prices compared to some in the series.
