1928 Peace Dollar

1928 Peace Dollar

The 1928 Peace Silver Dollar has the lowest mintage in the Peace dollar series, followed behind the 1927 Peace Dollar, which was more than double the mintage. However, it was widely believed that there were just a few 1928 Peace dollars ever released. This theory drove the price up wildly and garnered an incredible amount of investor interest.

The 1928 Peace dollar can often appear cloudy or milky with yellow staining. The center of the reverse is often a weak strike, but many coins with a higher grade were kept by collectors in early years due to its perceived rarity.

History of the 1928 Peace Dollar

Only a small amount of the 1928 were released in the year of minting. The treasury reportedly said that the coins were for ceremonial purposes. This led investors to believe they would be extremely rare from the start and many were kept in good grades.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the treasury began to release more and more bags, much to the dismay of early investors who had paid a large price for their collections. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the price for these rare 1928 Peace silver dollar coins really started to rise as it has done to this day.

1928 Peace Dollar Value

The 1928 Peace silver dollar value can hit upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. Lower grades can range from the hundreds to the thousands. The 1928 Peace dollar would make a valuable addition to any Peace dollar or coin collection, and you would own a small piece of history. There’s something special about acquiring a coin that has such a low mintage.
