1925 S Peace Dollar BU
The 1925-S Peace Dollar is among one of the lowest mintages in the Peace Dollar series. In total only 1,610,000 coins were ever minted at the San Fransisco mint in the year 1925. As a result of the low mintage, it can often be hard to find higher quality mint state coins at affordable prices. However, a nice brilliant uncirculated or mint state quality coin can be purchased for around $140-$150. In comparison with the 1925-P Peace Dollar, the 1925-S Peace Dollar is about 9 times less of a mintage.
The history of the Peace Dollar is quite rich. After the world war had ended, the United States Commission for Fine Arts was looking for a silver dollar to be produced that symbolized peace and prosperity. To accomplish this, the Commission hosted a contest in which was narrowed down to 8 different competing artists. A man named Anthony D. Francisci, an Italian immigrant, was the one who won the design contest. As a result, he designed the obverse of the Peace Dollar to feature a stunning lady liberty who was glorified as a goddess. The reverse featured a fierce bald eagle that was grasping a olive branch in its talons.
Every Peace Dollar from 1921 to 1935 was composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. The design of the coin stayed the same for all years except 1921. The 1921 Peace Dollar featured a high relief which in essence made all the features of the coin pronounced. Although stunning this was short lived. The reason was because the banks could not stack the 1921 Peace Dollar without them falling over. Therefore to solve this problem, the United States mint in 1922 produced the Peace Dollar with a low relief. From that year on the Peace Dollar remained a low relief.
