1918-D Wheat Penny
The 1918-D Wheat Penny is a relatively common date within the Wheat Penny series. It had a total mintage of just over 47.8 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. Although its mintage is much lower than the massive amounts produced at the Philadelphia Mint this same year, it’s possible to find brown, red-brown, and red examples fairly easily, and there are enough to meet the demand for them. This makes the price for the 1918-D more affordable compared to some of the others in the series.
History of the 1918-D Wheat Penny
The 1918-D Wheat Penny is a valuable coin to add to any Wheat Penny series collection, but it does require some cherrypicking to find a coin with a sharp strike and an attractive luster. The Denver Mint was known for using worn out dies that make for a less-than sharp strike, so the extra effort is worth it to find what you are looking for. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the D mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.
1918-D Wheat Penny Worth
The 1918-D Wheat Penny value ranges from below $1,000 for the highest grade brown example coins, and can reach upwards of $45,000 for higher grade red specimens, which is quite a jump. When looking for a 1918-D Wheat Penny, look for a sharp strike and an attractive luster to ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
