1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety II)
The second version of the 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter was created to replace the previous version in this same year that had an exposed breast. Certain interest groups pushed for the coin to be changed due to it being “immoral” and so it was changed after over 55 million coins had been sent out into circulation. The new version of the 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter covered Lady Liberty’s chest with chain mail armor.
History of the 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety II)
The 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter can be difficult to find in circulated grades, just as much as the Denver minted second variety of the same year. In Mint State and Gem condition, the coin becomes even more scarce, although this coin is still more affordable than the 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter. The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty holding a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other while wearing chain mail armor on her body. She stands in some form of gateway that features 13 stars and the words “In God We Trust” dividing the walls. The reverse of the coin features an American Bald Eagle in flight with 13 stars surrounding it.
1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety II) Value
The 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety II) value ranges from around five thousand dollars to upwards of forty-five thousand dollars for some of the highest grades available on the market today. The 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter would make a valuable addition to any Standing Liberty Quarter series collection and is well worth the effort to find one that is well-struck with a nice luster.
