1909-D Barber Dime

1909-D Barber Dime

The 1909-D Barber Dime had the smallest mintage out of the four coin issues in 1909 and the smallest mintage since 1904 with just a total of 954,000 from the Denver Mint. This coin features the ‘D’ mint mark that is popular among collectors. This coin is relatively easy to find in Mint State, and possibly easier to find than some of the others that were issued in this year, such as the 1909-O Barber Dime. But surprisingly, the 1909-D Barber Dime commands a higher premium even though more are available, possibly due to the popularity of small mintage coins.

History of the 1909-D Barber Dime

The 1909-D Barber Dime hasn’t been found in grades higher than MS66. This could possibly be due to strike quality and the inability to grade higher than this, so cherrypicking is advised whenever possible, while also setting expectations for the grades that a collector will be able to find. Charles Barber also designed the Barber Quarter and the Barber Half Dollar. The design on this coin features a right facing profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse wearing an olive branch crown with a ribbon, and a headband with “LIBERTY” inscribed on it. The reverse of the coin features a wreath of corn, oak and maple leaves, and wheat, and frames the word One Dime.

1909-D Barber Dime Value

The 1909-D Barber Dime value reaches upwards of $15,000 for some of the highest grades of the coin available, but can be found at more affordable prices in circulated grades and lower Mint State grades. The 1909-D Barber Dime can command a premium, and would make a great addition to any Barber Dime series collection.
