1908 V Nickel

1908 V Nickel

The 1908 V Nickel shrunk in mintage by almost half compared to the previous year. It had a total mintage of over 22 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This mint was known for its excellent craftsmanship and they produced beautiful 1908 V Nickel coins. It’s possible to find a wide range of grades for this coin as it still had a plentiful mintage, but the most common of these coins are in the MS63 and MS64 range. They have been found in MS65 and MS66 as well, but are much less common the higher the grade.

History of the 1908 V Nickel

The 1908 V Nickel is a coin worth choosing carefully to find one that is sharply struck. The coins in this series are known for having varying strike qualities, particularly on the stars of the obverse and the ear of corn on the left side of the reverse. Charles E. Barber designed the infamous liberty head coins including the V Nickel. Lady Liberty’s head appears on the obverse of the coin wearing a crown. The “V” appears on the reverse and gives this coin its nickname and represents the five cent value.

1908 Liberty Head V Nickel Value

The 1908 Liberty Head V Nickel value reaches upwards of over $11,000 for the highest grades of the coin, which appear to max out around MS66. This is a great value and the coin can be found with excellent overall eye appeal and attractive toning. Although a fully struck coin is difficult to find at times with this series, it doesn’t seem to detract from the demand and value of these coins.
