1902 V Nickel

1902 V Nickel

The 1902 V Nickel had the largest mintage yet, with over 31 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Due to this large mintage, collectors have been able to find plenty of Mint State examples. Many of the 1902 Liberty Head Nickel coins exist around Mint State 64, but it’s possible to find this coin all the way up to MS67 where it is very rare. The Philadelphia Mint was known for its excellent craftsmanship and the 1902 V Nickel was a quality coin worth finding sharply struck.

History of the 1902 V Nickel

The 1902 V Nickel should be chosen carefully, which should be a relatively easy task considering so many coins are in existence. While many of the coins are well-struck, a common issue within the series are weak spots on various points in the coin, especially fully struck stars on the obverse and a fully struck ear of corn on the left side of the reverse. Charles E. Barber designed the Liberty Head coins including this V Nickel, the Barber Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar. The liberty head is featured on the obverse of all of these coins, hence their names.
