1892 V Nickel

1892 V Nickel

The 1892 V Nickel had a total mintage of over 11.6 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. While this mintage is several million smaller than the previous year, it is equal in terms of how many surviving specimens there are. It’s relatively easy to find the 1892 Liberty Head Nickel in most circulated and Mint State grades up to about Mint State 66 where it drops off dramatically in availability.

History of the 1892 Liberty Head Nickel

The 1892 Liberty Head “V” Nickel typically had a solid strike and attractive overall surfaces, but cherrypicking is always advised with these coins as sometimes the stars on this particular issue can be weakly struck. The obverse features the liberty head wearing a crown that says LIBERTY. She is surrounded by 13 stars representing the 13 colonies. The reverse showcases the Roman numeral V representing the five cent coin. It is framed with a wreath of plants. Charles E. Barber was the designer of the V Nickel and other Liberty Head coins like the Barber Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar.

1892 V Nickel Value

The 1892 V Nickel value reaches upwards of around $11,000 for the highest grades of the coin, which is typically around Mint State 66. This is a great value for this coin and would make a great coin for those looking to start collecting this series without breaking the bank. A more affordable collection can be built with circulated and lower Mint State grade coins. The 1892 V Nickel would make an excellent addition to any V Nickel series collection.
