Considered to be one of the most successful series of all time, the Morgan Silver Dollar’s first year of issue was in 1878.  An unfortunate, yet serious concern, nation-wide shortage of silver resulted in the stoppage of production for these coins. Exciting news came shortly after in 1918 after we had won the World War. The Pittman Act was passed, which allowed for our U.S. government to buy and melt hundreds of millions of dollars worth of silver that would be used to create more coins in 1921. In 1921, the Peace Silver Dollar was also being forged by our government to celebrate and serve as proof of our victory in the World War, and before the Morgan Silver Dollar series was the Seated Liberty Dollar series.

The 1892-P Morgan Silver Dollar serves as a perfect example and reminder of the success and beauty behind the best of 7 different coin designs were made by George T. Morgan which resulted in the genius Morgan Silver Dollar series. At the time when he first came up with the design for the Morgan Silver Dollar, George was an assistant in the U.S. Mint, but later became the Chief Engraver. On the reverse side of the Morgan Dollar is a robust American Bald Eagle with 7 tail feathers that is holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other talon. On the obverse side of the coin is Lady Liberty’s charming face with 13 stars surrounding her image, with each star representing the original 13 colonies. Regardless of her fame at the time, the school teacher Anna Williams was chosen to model for the Lady Liberty design of the coin.

The Morgan Silver Dollar series was struck in five unique mints: Philadelphia (P) San Francisco (S), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC), and Denver (D). The last year of issue for the Morgan Dollar series was 1921, and this was the first time that the Denver Mint struck a Morgan Silver Dollar.

Although all Morgan Dollars have a $1 face value, are composed of  90% silver, 10% copper, weigh 26.73 grams, and have a diameter of 38.1 mm, the mintage of the 1892-P Morgan Silver Dollar was only 1,036,000, making it much rarer than the other 1892 minted coins, which is very uncommon for Philadelphia minted Morgan Silver Dollars. It has been well over a century since this 1892-P Morgan Silver Dollar was produced.
