1878 is an iconic year because that is the first year of issue for the Morgan Silver Dollar series. Production of the Morgan Dollar stopped in 1904 because of a nation-wide shortage of silver in the U.S. The series extended to 1921 because in 1918, after we had won the World War, the Pittman Act was passed, which allowed for our U.S. government to buy and melt hundreds of millions of dollars worth of silver that would be used to create more coins. To solidify our victory of the World War into history, the U.S. government decided to produce the Peace Silver Dollar, and before the Morgan Silver Dollar series was the Seated Liberty Dollar series. These silver dollars were being minted simultaneously with the Barber Half Dollar and Walking Liberty Half Dollars.

In his career, George T. Morgan came up with 7 different coin designs. His most successful one was the Morgan Silver Dollar series with coins like the 1891-P Morgan Silver Dollar. Early on in his career when he first came up with the original concept, he was an assistant in the U.S. Mint, but later became the Chief Engraver. On the reverse side of the Morgan Dollar is a strapping American Bald Eagle with 7 tail feathers that is holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other talon. On the obverse side of the coin is Lady Liberty’s charming face with 13 stars surrounding her image, with each star representing the original 13 colonies. Lady Liberty’s image was based off of Anna Williams, a regular school teacher that was chosen as the model.

The Morgan Silver Dollar series was struck in five unique mints: Philadelphia (P) San Francisco (S), New Orleans (O), Carson City (CC), and Denver (D). 1921 was the last year of issue for the series and the only time the Denver Mint produced Morgan Silver Dollars.

Regarding specific details, Morgan Dollars have a $1 face value, are composed of 90% silver, 10% copper, weigh 26.73 grams, and have a diameter of 38.1 mm. The mintage of the 1891-P Morgan Silver Dollar was 8,693,556, which is what makes it a bit more common and affordable compared to most of the other Morgan Dollars in the series. Excluding the last year of issue, Morgan Dollars have not been produced in well over a century, and the aforementioned facts are just a few reasons as to why the coins have and always will be beloved by both investors and collectors.
