Historical Significance

Theodora was far more than simply the wife of an emperor. Contemporary and later accounts describe her as an important adviser to Justinian, and she was involved in many aspects of imperial policy.

During the famous Nika Riots of AD 532, Theodora reportedly urged Justinian not to abandon Constantinople, a moment traditionally regarded as one of the defining episodes of her political influence.

The reign of Justinian was also an extraordinary period in Byzantine history. His ambitious restoration of Roman territories, the compilation of Corpus Juris Civilis—which became enormously influential in Western legal history—and the construction of the Hagia Sophia all belong to this remarkable era.

Theodora died in AD 548, but her legacy continued to make her one of the most recognizable women of the Byzantine world.

Included in this presentation is an authentic bronze nummus struck under Emperor Justinian. The nummus was a small denomination used in the Byzantine monetary system and represents the everyday coinage of the empire during the 6th century.
