In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were assassinated by an operative of the Serbian secret society known as The Black Hand. The killings shook Europe to its core, starting the chaos that was World War I.
This box contains a Silver Denar coin issued by the Kingdom of Serbia that circulated during the Great War. The obverse features a portrait of Peter I, the king installed by the Black Hand after the assassination of Alexander I in 1903. The Black Hand was a steady and fearsome force in early 1900s Europe, and this piece perfectly captures the unrest and political intruige of the time.
