Seated Liberty Half Dime Value
There were only two types of half dimes ever minted in the U.S., one was the Bust half dime, and the other was the Seated Liberty half dime. Today we will talk about the Seated Liberty half dime. The Seated Half Dime was minted from 1837 to 1873. It was minted in Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The Seated Liberty Half Dime was the second and last half dime to be minted in the U.S. The Half Dime would later be replaced by the nickel. For collectors, finding coins minted from San Francisco or New Orleans is an exciting accomplishment, but New Orleans Seated Liberty Half Dimes are typically more rare than Philadelphia and San Fransisco minted ones. The design of the Seated Liberty half dime had a similar design to the rest of the Seated Liberty coins that were produced. The designer, Christian Gobrecht can be credited with its beautiful appearance. The obverse consisted of Liberty seated upon a rock. Lady Liberty held a Liberty Pole, and wore a flowing dress. She was seen leaning against a rock that was a striped shield and was surrounded by 13 stars. On the reverse was written “Half Dime” surrounded by a wreath .
The Seated Liberty half dime was not as popular during its mintage period than it is today. The New Orleans mint produced the least amount of coins and therefore are often most rare, however Philadelphia and San Fransisco also produced some key date coins.
