Seated Liberty Dollar Value
The Seated Liberty Dollar is a popular coin amongst collectors, it didn’t claim its popularity due to the number of coins that were produced, but because of the rarity of the well preserved pieces. Most of the coins that were well kept still have wear and tear most likely due to the age of these coins. Each Seated Liberty Dollar was 90% silver and 10% copper. The Seated Liberty dollar was first minted and released in July of 1840, that makes some of these coins 160 years old!. The Seated Liberty Dollar’s obverse design depicts Liberty Seated, holding a liberty pole accompanied by 13 stars. On the reverse of the Seated Liberty Dollar is a depiction of a eagle carrying olive branches in one foot and arrows in the other. Additionally, the eagle has a shield on its chest.
The designer of the Seated Liberty Dollar was an engraver named Christian Gobrecht. His design lasted from from 1840- 1865. The Seated Liberty Dollar’s reverse design was later modified to have the phrase “In God we trust” written on a ribbon that was placed above the eagle. The same design was also used on the Seated Liberty Half Dollar.
The Seated Liberty was minted from 1840-1873. It was originally only minted in Philadelphia and then in 1846 the New Orleans mint started producing the Seated Liberty Dollar as well. Later on the Seated Liberty Dollar was also minted in Carson City, and San Francisco. Some of the more desired coins can cost thousands of dollars but the most expensive is the 1870-S Liberty Seated Dollar, with the uncirculated version of this will cost around $1,750,000!
